The doctrine of the medieval theological and philosophical school called (Lat. schola). This concept is defined in the same time a particular way to establish the truth of faith (educational method), practiced in the schools of the monasteries.

The development of the School experienced three stages. In the first phase, the so-called first school (800-1200 AD)
formed the scholastic method and the first confrontation took place with the writings of Aristotle were translated and disseminated in this period. The next

high School (1150-1300 BC) is defined as the heyday of Scholasticism. It is marked by the discovery of the remaining works of Aristotle and attempt to connect the philosophy of Aristotle with the Christian conceptions (Thomas Aquinas). Together took place also the comparison with the Arabic philosophy. In the last phase of this era, that of late School (1300-1400c). is already the decadence of Scholasticism.

One of the central questions of medieval philosophy, is the problem of universals. The question is whether the universal concepts spettasse una propria realtà o se essi fossero soltanto il risultato del pensiero e del linguaggio.
